Founded in 2016, MLK Voice 4 Youth is dedicated to amplifying youth voices through respect, understanding, and compassion, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy. The contest provides a platform for young people in grades 7-12 to speak out on issues important to them, reflecting MLK's commitment to social change and justice.
The competition culminates in semifinals and finals where contestants creatively show case their talents in spoken word. Their powerful and passionate messages impress judges, audience members as well as a virtual audience that in 2023 included viewers in the US, Ghana, Nigeria, Canada, the UK, Guyana, Panama, Sweden, South Korea, and New Zealand!
A diverse panel of 7 judges, representing sectors such as corporate, academic, spiritual, and nonprofit, select the finalists and winners. The number 7 holds significance, symbolizing the founding members of Dr. King’s fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
MLK Voice 4 Youth contestants are extraordinary. Over the years, winners like Kaamilah Diabate, Tyrek Traylor, Kemuel Harding, Deborah Olatunji, Nyani Scott, Neha Das, Srijay Chenna, and Ayomikun Adeojo, have gone on to achieve academic success and contribute to various community events and organizations.
In 2025, the contest moves to Black History Month, expanding its impact and giving more youth the chance to express how their chosen American activist inspires them to advocate for societal change. It is clear MLK Voice 4 Youth not only fosters leadership, but also creates lasting connections and opportunities for young change-makers.
